Dev Blog: The Making of Spirits of Blackwood

Published: Thef - Sep 16, 2024

Welcome to the first behind-the-scenes look at Spirits of Blackwood, my latest project for the September 2024 EVERYWHERE game jam. What started as an idea for a short horror game has grown into a creepy, atmospheric experience that takes players deep into the heart of a cursed forest. In this post, I’ll walk you through the key parts of the development so far, from the storyline and gameplay mechanics to the jump scares and visuals.

Storyline Development

The core of Spirits of Blackwood is its haunting narrative. The game begins with the player driving through the dense, foggy roads surrounding Blackwood Forest. Things take a turn for the worse when the player sees a spirit in the road, leading to a car crash that leaves them stranded in the eerie forest. From there, players explore the unsettling landscape, uncovering journal entries and inscriptions that hint at the forest’s dark past.

Key elements of the story include an abandoned campsite with mysterious notes left by previous campers, a forgotten shrine tied to the spirit’s origins, and a final showdown at the Heart of Blackwood—an abandoned cabin that becomes the setting for the game's climax.

One of the most exciting aspects of building this world is the lore behind the spirit. The forest was once protected by this ancient entity, but betrayal turned it into a vengeful, twisted being that now haunts anyone who enters Blackwood. By giving the player small clues through journals and the shrine’s inscription, I’ve created a story that builds tension while leaving a lot to the imagination.

Gameplay Mechanics

The gameplay is designed to create tension and unease. Players must navigate through the forest, collecting clues and avoiding the spirit that stalks them. The semi open-world aspect of the forest gives players freedom to explore while gradually ramping up the fear factor through environmental storytelling and visual cues.

One of the mechanics I’m particularly excited about is the Spectral Token, a stick-like symbol representing the spirit. Throughout the game, the player is led to believe that breaking the Spectral Token is the key to escaping the curse. But as with many choices in horror games, nothing is as simple as it seems.

Visual Design

The visual design plays a huge role in creating the eerie atmosphere that I want players to feel. Dark, foggy woods with towering trees, flickering shadows, and abandoned locations like the campsite and cabin all help set the mood. I also created a symbol, the Spectral Token, to represent the spirit and incorporated it into the game’s visuals to deepen the lore.

I’ve put a lot of effort into the lighting and environmental effects. The forest feels alive, with mist curling around the trees and distant shadows playing tricks on the player’s mind. One of the key locations is the Forgotten Shrine, an ancient, crumbling structure hidden deep in the woods. Its glowing, mystical aura makes it feel like it holds ancient secrets, which it does—this is where players learn about the spirit’s curse through a cryptic inscription.

Jump Scares and Sound Design

Jump scares play a big role in Spirits of Blackwood, but I’ve been careful to balance them with a slow build of tension. The game features several jump scares, like shadowy figures darting between trees or the spirit suddenly appearing in reflective surfaces. My goal is to keep players on edge, with moments of silence broken by unsettling sounds and sudden scares.

Sound design has been equally important in creating the game’s atmosphere. Whispering voices, distant footsteps, and ghostly growls fill the audio space, immersing the player in the forest’s haunted environment. Paired with the flickering lights and dynamic shadows, these elements make every step through Blackwood Forest feel like a risk.

Trailer Tease

As part of the marketing for Spirits of Blackwood, I’ve begun working on a teaser trailer. The trailer will focus on the eerie setting, showing glimpses of key areas within the game. The voiceover will build suspense, warning players of the dangers that lurk in the shadows without giving away too much of the story. The final scene teases the spirit without fully revealing it, leaving players intrigued to discover the truth for themselves.

What’s Next?

I’m currently polishing the game’s final scene, where the player must make a choice that ultimately seals their fate. The climax takes place in the Heart of Blackwood, where players are tormented by the spirit and must decide whether to confront it or try to flee. Of course, in classic horror fashion, neither option ends well for the player.

Moving forward, I’ll be focusing on refining the game’s audio design and adding the final touches to the environment. I’m also planning a few more scares to keep players on edge during their exploration of the forest.

Conclusion

Developing Spirits of Blackwood has been a thrilling experience. From crafting the lore to designing jump scares and eerie visuals, this game has allowed me to dive deep into the horror genre. I can’t wait to see how players react to the world of Blackwood Forest and the sinister spirit that haunts it. Stay tuned for updates as I wrap up development.
